Breast Implants and Complications

Breast implants have been on the market for many years. This is one option that women have to enhance their appearance. As with any type of cosmetic surgery there are some complications that can arise.

Rippling or Wrinkling

Rippling or wrinkling of the shell on a breast implant is a common complication that can happen with many styles and types of breast implants. Over the muscle placement has more signs of this complication than other placement methods. Saline implants also cause this complication to occur more often than those made of silicone.

Rupturing of Breast Implants

Rupturing happens in some cases of breast implants. This usually means the implant has been punctured in some way and the substance inside leaks out. If it is a saline implant that has ruptured, the body will absorb the liquid and, cause the implant to eventually become flat. Silicone implants that rupture are harder to detect as they will stay in the general area that they were placed.

Capsular Contracture and Breast Implants

Capsular contracture is a complication that arises when the area surrounding the implant hardens. It is a common occurrence in any breast implant. It is more noticeable in implants that have been overfilled or are close to the surface area of the skin. The only placement that seems to not acquire this occurrence is when it is placed completely under the patient’s chest muscles.

Displaced Breast Implants

Displacement happens when breast implants move out of their placed position. This is more apt to occur in smooth shell implants rather than those made with a textured shell. A common association between displacement of breast implants and patients is life occurrences. Age and pregnancy tend to cause the breasts to droop and sag. If the patient has implants while one of these life changes happens, they are likely to become displaced and need another surgery to correct the issue.

Inverted Nipples

Inverted nipples can sometimes be present before a breast augmentation and have 3 different grades. They can sometimes be made to return to a normal position using suction pads and sometimes inverted nipple surgery is need to correct the problem.
